Minas Gerais

A large continental state in southeastern Brazil, it is known for colonial-era cities that hark back to the country's 18th-century gold rush. Among them are São João del Rei, Tiradentes and Ouro Preto, the former capital, all with cobblestone streets, ornate mansions and baroque churches decorated by the sculptor Aleijadinho.
